Anatomy & Medical Terminology (20 Week) Course Description

Required Materials: "The Language of Medicine" By Chabner

During this class you will be introduced to medical terms and how to use these terms correctly. Also a discussion of anatomy, physiology and pathology will take place as appropriate to each area of study.

This class will meet once a week and each week a new topic will be discussed. Each student will be required to be prepared by reading ahead, doing any assignments given and be willing to contribute to the class discussion.

Week 1 - Introduction to the course, requirements and expectations to complete the course. Chapter 1: Discussed. Construction of Medical Terms, examples of the terms and how to interpret them. Practice exercises will be done in class to reinforce the topics discussed.

Week 2 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. Chapter 2: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the topics discussed.

Week 3 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. Chapter 3: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the topics discussed.

Week 4 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. Chapter 4: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the topics discussed.

At the beginning of class of week 5 there will be an expanded questionnaire on the first four chapters discussed.

Week 5 - The Integumentary System: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 6 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Skeletal System, (the skull and spinal column): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 7 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Skeletal System, (the upper extremities): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 8 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Skeletal System, (the lower extremities): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

At the beginning of class of week 9 there will be an expanded questionnaire on the last four chapters discussed.

Week 9 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Muscular System, (introduction to basic muscle structure, relationship of muscles to surrounding tissues and joint function): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 10 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Muscular System, (muscles of the spinal column and skull): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 11 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Muscular System, (muscles of the upper extremities): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 12 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Muscular System, (muscles of the lower extremities): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

At the beginning of class of week 13 there will be an expanded questionnaire on the last four chapters discussed.

Week 13 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Endocrine System: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 14 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Cardiovascular System, (the heart): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 15 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Cardiovascular System, (the blood vessels): Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 16 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Respiratory System: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

At the beginning of class of week 17 there will be an expanded questionnaire on the last four chapters discussed.

Week 17 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Lymphatic and Immune Systems: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 18 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Female Reproductive System: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 19 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. The Male Reproductive & Urinary Systems: Discussed. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

Week 20 - Brief questionnaire to assess the progress of each student. A brief overview of Psychiatric and Pharmacology Terms will be presented. Practice exercises to reinforce the system discussed.

At the end of class of week 20 there will be an expanded questionnaire on chapters 17, 18 & 19.

This schedule can change and can be altered depending upon the needs of the students, and/or at the discretion of the school, Instructor or outside circumstances.

Class Size
The maximum number of students will be 20 per class. Class size is limited and is on a fist come, first served basis. Should there be a high demand for additional classes Advanced Coding Services will try to accommodate students by adding a class to schedule.
